This journal entry is from Whitefield’s second journey to the colonies at age 24, which was his first trip through Maryland. In his lifetime, he made a total of 7 trips to the United States. On this second trip that began in Philadelphia, his ultimate destination and purpose was to go to Georgia to establish an orphanage. He traveled through Maryland from Monday, December 3 through December 10, 1739 crossing the Potomac River into Virginia on December 11. He made his journal entries in the following places during that week: Northeast, Joppa, Newtown, Annapolis, Upper Marlborough, Port Tobacco, Piscataway, and Potomac.
